Pearl Size Guide by DezLin

There are many details about pearls to think about when purchasing. For instance, the different types of pearls, their shapes, and colors…

Lucky for you, we’ve covered all that in our previous blog posts!

In this blog post, we’ll talk about one of the more complex things about pearls: their size. If you want pearl earrings, what size should you get? What about a necklace? Do you get the same size?

There’s no need to feel overwhelmed. We’re here to help guide you through the different pearl sizes available and which one you should choose depending on the type of jewelry and your preferences.

Want to solve this pearl size confusion once and for all? Make sure to keep reading!

Understanding Pearl Sizing

Pearls can be as tiny as 1mm and go up to 20mm!

First, the pearl size is determined by measuring the diameter of a pearl. This measurement is typically in millimeters and indicated as 7mm (seven millimeters). But round pearls are measured differently from other shaped pearls, so let's discuss that briefly.

The diameter of round pearls is measured perpendicular to the drilled hole if its drilled. If not drilled, pick the best spot. To measure, you will use a caliper, preferably a digital one, as it's much easier to read. Search for Pearl Caliper, and you'll find tons on Google or Amazon.

Other funky shapes, like buttons, stars, baroque, rice, etc., are measured by length and width.

Different Pearl Types

As we discussed in our introduction, different types of pearls are available in the market, each known for their various sizes. Make sure to check out our blog, Different Types of Pearls and Their Shapes, if you are unfamiliar.

For example, Akoya pearls are typically small, ranging from 1mm to 7mm, and can reach 9-9.5mm. Freshwater pearls are relatively larger, from 5mm to as large as 13mm, though that's rare.

Prominent pearls like Tahitian and the South Sea are big and can reach 18 to 20mm.

Fun fact: the larger the pearl size, the higher its price tag!

Now that you know about different pearl types, their typical size range, and how they are measured, we can move on to the next part: which pearl size should you choose?

Which Pearl Size Should You Buy?

Small Size

Pearls around 5mm are petite pearls, making them perfect for those who like to wear dainty and minimalistic jewelry.

5mm pearl earrings and rings are an excellent choice to add subtle bling to your life.

Check out freshwater pearls if you're looking for quality, affordable pearls in this size. They're readily available in many different colors and shapes.

Medium Size

Pearls that range from 7mm-9mm are considered medium-sized and are the most popular size range in pearl jewelry.

It's still subtle but prominent enough to elevate your look. Pearl jewelry made of 7mm pearls is also perfect as a daily wear accessory!

You can find this size range in freshwater pearls, and if you’re looking for a more high-end option, you can check out Akoya pearls.

Large Size

Pearls that are 10mm and above in size are what we categorize as large pearls.

If you want to make a statement with your pearls, this size range is perfect!

However, pearls known for their bigger sizes are South Sea and Tahitian, both rare and extremely expensive.

Extra Large Size

Extra large pearls are none other than Edison pearls! For more details on this type of pearl, check out our blog post: What Are Edison Pearls and Are They Worth Your Money?

Edison pearls typically come in an 11-12mm size range and many stunning natural colors, making them suitable pearls if you like to stand out.
