How to Open a Pearl Oyster (Vacuum-Packed) Step by Step
How to Open a Pearl Oyster
Cut the vacuum pouch, put on gloves, slide a butter knife into the seam at the back of the shell, twist, and lift the top shell off. The pearl sits in the soft meat; pluck it out, rinse it with dish soap and warm water, and dry it. The whole reveal takes about a minute. These steps are for a vacuum-packed pearl party oyster, which is a preserved shell with a cultured freshwater pearl inside, not a fresh oyster from the seafood counter.
What you need
A vacuum-packed pearl oyster (every DezLin oyster is guaranteed to hold a pearl)
Disposable gloves
A butter knife or an oyster opening tool. Do not use a sharp kitchen knife.
A bowl to open over, and a small dish for the pearl
Dish soap, warm water and a soft cloth
Somewhere to put the pearl: a cage pendant, a Drop It Locket or a sterling silver piece from a DIY Bomb
Oysters do not ship with a tool. The Pearl Reveal Kit includes one, and the pearl party supplies collection has tools and gloves for a whole party.
The six steps
Cut open the pouch. Snip a corner of the vacuum bag with scissors and slide the oyster out over the bowl. There will be some preservation liquid and a briny smell; that is normal.
Gloves on. The shell edges are sharp and the liquid is for display, not food.
Find the hinge. Hold the oyster with the pointed hinge end toward you and the lip facing away. Keep your fingers on the sides, not in front of the blade.
Slide and twist. Push the butter knife into the seam near the hinge, then twist the blade a quarter turn. The shell pops. Run the knife along the seam to free the top shell and lift it off. Freshwater shells open easier than Akoya-style shells.
Pluck the pearl. Run a gloved finger through the soft meat. The pearl is usually near the middle. Twins and triplets happen, so check twice. Monster oysters hide 20 to 40 small pearls in the meat, so take your time and squeeze gently.
Rinse, dry, admire. Wash the pearl with a drop of dish soap in warm water, rub it with a soft cloth and let it dry. A dab of coconut oil brings up the shine. Then set it; see how to set a pearl.
Opening on camera
Hosts hold the oyster up to the lens, say the buyer's name and ring size or color wish, then open it in one motion. Keep the bowl under the shell so liquid never hits the table. Call out twins when they land; that moment is the reason people watch. If you ship oysters to customers for a home reveal, send these steps with the order.
Safety
The oyster is preserved, not edible. Never eat the meat or taste the liquid.
Keep shells and pearls away from small children's mouths. Pearls are a choking hazard.
Wash hands and the work surface with soap afterward.
Store unopened oysters sealed in a cool, dry place until the party.
What to do with the shell and the pearl
Keep the shell if you like it; many hosts rinse and dry it as a keepsake, and DezLin will pack your shell with a mounted-pearl order if you ask. The pearl can go three ways: open a cage pendant and snap it inside, drop it in a glass Drop It Locket, or half-drill it and set it in a sterling silver ring or pendant. The pearl size chart shows which cage or locket fits each pearl size.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a trick to opening pearl oysters?
Yes: start at the hinge, not the lip. Slide a butter knife into the seam near the pointed end and twist a quarter turn. The muscle gives way and the shell lifts off. Forcing the lip side cracks shells and bends knives.
How do you open a vacuum-sealed oyster?
Cut one corner of the pouch with scissors over a bowl, slide the oyster out, and open it with a butter knife at the hinge. The pouch keeps the preserved shell sealed, so there is nothing to soak or thaw first.
Can you remove a pearl from an oyster without killing it?
A pearl party oyster is already a preserved shell, so nothing is harmed when you open it. On a working pearl farm, technicians can remove a pearl and return the live mollusk to the water to grow another, but that is farm work, not a party reveal.
Is a pearl from an oyster worth anything?
A party pearl is a real cultured freshwater pearl of modest value, usually 6 to 8mm. Its worth is the keepsake and the jewelry you make from it, not a resale price. The honest breakdown is on Are pearl party pearls real?.
How do I clean a pearl from an oyster?
Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft cloth. Avoid mineral oil, which can leave residue; a little coconut oil is fine for shine. Dyed pearls can fade if liquid seeps in, so dry them well. Longer care tips are in how to care for your pearls.
How rare are twins?
Twins and triplets turn up often enough to be the signature moment of a pearl party, and DezLin sells twin and triplet oysters on purpose for hosts who want them. The odds are on how rare are twin pearls in an oyster.
These pearls are beautiful! My first order was for 3 of the oysters that had 5 pearls each (1 Edison, 1 larger pearl, 2 rounds, and 1 shape). I also ordered 3 of the mini quad oysters. My mom, son, and I were blown away by the size and quality of the pearls! We placed a second order soon after, hoping it wasn't a fluke. Nope...Our second order was just as beautiful, if not more!! Shipping was super fast...It even arrived 1 day early! Yayyy! The picture I submitted doesn't come close to showing how beautiful the pearls truly are, but I tried. I have ordered oysters from many different companies and these are, by far, my favorite! I can't wait to place my next order...I'm just trying to pace myself so I don't become the crazy pearl lady! Haha
Omg love it all! Been a customer for years now and yet to get copies of things I don't want copies of. Linda and crew are amazing. Customer service is amazing.
Love this necklace! Got lucky with a triple in that the 3 colors worked amazingly together and were colors I wear frequently. Dezlin is top notch and I will continue to shop with them!
Shipping was super fast, and everything came in perfect condition! We had the best time opening these at home and can’t wait to order more;) I found you on TikTok and love your videos! Thank you so much at DezLin!
"I bought 2 colored twin oysters and 3 classic twin oyster. All were lovely, wish I had more color options but that’s the luck of the draw. Nonetheless they are all pretty and elegant." - Wendy M.
I love, love, love my rice pearls! I even got a double in one oyster :-) So beautiful! Looking forward to my next order I just placed today. Thank you for your service and dedication to the pearl community!
Service is stellar! Linda is amazing. Highly recommend. It’s hard to find individuals who truly care about what they do and it is absolutely clear that she cares!!
Love the jewelry. Beautiful and I got a lot of compliments. DezLin cared that I would love my jewelry and sent me pictures of pearl colors to make sure I would be very happy with my choice. I cannot recommend enough for the customer service alone.
